Detroit Radio Personalities Jump into Live Streaming Video

Since its launch in April 2018, local live streaming network, New Radio Media, has built a stellar lineup of morning shows featuring popular personalities from Detroit’s terrestrial radio scene. The switch to a live video format gives these veterans of Detroit radio a chance to meet their fans “face to face” every day. The audience has the option of watching or just listening, live or on-demand – with access from any device using the NRMStreamz app.

Weekdays from 8 am – 1 pm, you’ll find an array of local-interest programming – politics, news, pop culture, humor and more.

At Home with the McAllisters

The morning lineup starts at 8 am in the basement studio of At Home with the McAllisters. From their home base, Bill and his wife, Danielle, talk about local news, celebrities, pop news, trends, trivia, and just about anything – and anyone – that piques their interest.  It’s a fast-paced and funny two-hour morning show that will energize your day.

Hosts:

Bill McAllister has been making Detroiters laugh for nearly twenty years as a radio broadcaster and local media fixture. Detroit area listeners will remember him from top ranking morning drive radio shows, “The Jay and Bill Show” and the “Stoney and Bill Show” on 97.1 The Ticket. After hosting his own morning radio show for the past decade, Bill made the transition to live streaming video – the next wave in broadcasting. Bill knows the area better than any local media personality, and he’s excited about the hyper-local focus of New Radio Media’s programming.

Bill’s co-host is his wife, Danielle Carlomusto. Danielle has been making music and entertaining Detroiters for nearly 15 years, with stints at WNIC, The Beat, and WYCD.

Pop That Culture

At 10 am, Pop That Culture brings you the latest pop news – from celebrity news to trending trivia. Everything from TV and movies to food, local life, and nerdy stuff. It’s a fun, fast hour where long-time friends Sara and Joe do a daily download of what’s on their radar.

Hosts:

Sara Fouracre  previously brought her own special twist on news, celebrity gossip, and daily life to popular shows like “Mojo in the Morning” on Channel 955 and “Stoney and Bill” on 97.1 The Ticket.

Joe Santos landed a radio gig at WHYT-FM in Detroit while attending college. After college, he spent time at WRIF-FM, WXDG-FM, and four years in New York with MTV Networks with a stop at WLVQ-FM in Columbus before returning to Detroit where he was on the air at WDRQ-FM. Joe later became Creative Services Director at WKRK-FM, then an on-air personality on WDVD-FM with the popular AM drive show, “The Blaine Fowler Morning Show.”

The Craig Fahle Show

At 11 am, the two-hour Craig Fahle Show begins. This daily talk show focuses on current events in Metro Detroit and the state of Michigan. From local happenings to global news…if it impacts or interests the Metro Detroit community, you’ll hear about it on the Craig Fahle Show. Craig’s guests include journalists, experts, politicians, business leaders, and others making a difference in the shared community. The show offers fact-based, honest and open discussion and debate about complex issues – with an emphasis on respectful presentations of opposing views. The show sheds light on difficult subjects in a way that is informative, entertaining, and interactive. Callers and social media interaction fuel the discussion. On a lighter note, the  “Friday Follies” are a humorous look at both the big stories and some of the more offbeat happenings of the week.

Host:

Craig Fahle is well known and respected in the Metro Detroit radio market, having spent more than twenty years as a public radio journalist. He won numerous awards for both his reporting and his daily public affairs program, “The Craig Fahle Show”, which aired for seven years on WDET. Over the course of his talk show, Craig conducted more than ten thousand interviews.

Craig Fahle spent the past four years as Director of Public Affairs for the Detroit Land Bank Authority. Prior to joining the DLBA, he worked at NPR affiliate WDET-FM in Detroit, NPR affiliate WFAE in Charlotte, NC, and at the Michigan Public Radio network in Lansing, Michigan. In his time at WDET, he was a reporter, news anchor, editor, talk show host, and finally General Manager for programming. He was assistant news director at WFAE, and was the State Capitol correspondent for the statewide Michigan Public Radio network.

The Transition…

These former radio show hosts are opening new doors for the Detroit radio audience on this live streaming platform.  The option to view morning talk shows as video brings added excitement and gives the hosts a chance to bring physical comedy and a personal connection to the mix.  The NRMStreamz app makes shows available from any device, and on-demand archives let fans catch up whenever they like.  All in all, there’s a lot to like about radio hosts jumping into live streaming video!

The Joys of Interviewing

Something that most people don’t realize is that when you are having a conversation with someone, you are essentially interviewing them. That’s why when you interview someone, you should be having a conversation. We’ve all heard or watched interviews where the host is going through a list of questions. It’s boring.

Every interviewer has their own style. Personally, if I can get a 30-minute interview out of a two-hour conversation, that’s a success. My approach to interviewing a guest is to make them feel comfortable – maybe even talk about things that aren’t directly related to what they’re doing. I slowly work my questions in. Not in a direct way. I want them to walk away wondering if they had just been interviewed, or if they just hung out for two hours talking to a friend. To me, that is what makes Motor City Juke Joint  on New Radio Media so unique and personal. It’s people talking about music.

I’ve done well over 100 interviews. Some of them were live on air. Some of them were recorded. A few of those will never see the light of day. There’s one in particular that stands out. I won’t name the person that I interviewed, because he is rather well known. The interview was conducted via phone. He was on tour and didn’t have time to stop by the studio. Anyone that has met me, or listened to my show, knows that I’m a talker. This person… was not. He responded with mostly one or two word answers. Sometimes with a sentence. It wasn’t until I brought up his other career as a college professor that the interview changed direction. Instead of talking about music, we started talking about math and how it was relaxing to him. He told me that when he gets off stage he immediately starts working on math equations. That’s how he unwinds after a performance.

Whether you’re a musician, actor, or even a broadcaster – everyone needs to decompress. Some drink and socialize. Others prefer quiet.  Some like to exercise their minds. We all have our own way.

So You Want to be a Promoter – part 1

Let me start off by asking, “What the hell is wrong with you?”

All kidding aside, that’s really a question that you should ask yourself. I’ve been a promoter for close to 13 years now. Initially, I thought that it was going to be easy. I thought that it wouldn’t really cost anything – that I was going to do it for the music. In reality, it was hard, and expensive.

Most people don’t realize that promoting bands is an actual business. Any promoter that tells you that they don’t pay themselves at least something is a lying liar face telling lies out of their lie hole. Most people don’t realize that there is overhead. You have to pay for the flyers, posters, and now Facebook ads. Let’s not forget the most important thing, the bands. We’ll get to that part in a minute. Basically, it costs money. Money that will come out of your pocket if you’re not smart. I always paid myself on average of 15% of the door. That way my costs are covered.

The most important thing when it comes to pay is the bands. The most common arrangement will be the door deal. This is really the route you want to take when you’re starting off, since you’ll mainly be booking local talent. Sure, it’s great to work out a door deal with everyone. That means that whatever money is collected at the door is divided up among the bands after the venue takes their cut.

Right now you’re probably wondering, “Why does the venue get a cut of the money?” Well, here’s the reason. The venue has to pay a sound engineer. The sound engineer runs the audio board and makes sure that the band sounds good. It’s a job that the average Joe off the street can do. It’s job that requires skill and training.

After you’ve been booking and promoting, you’ll probably start making a name for yourself. That’s when touring acts will start contacting you to book shows. Some of these bands will ask for a guarantee. This is where things can go wrong. First let me explain what a guarantee is. A guarantee is a set cost for a band to play. This is something that can be negotiated. You also have to make sure that you charge the appropriate amount for admission.

Detroit Radio Stack of Records

On the lookout…or is hear out?

Music is something that has always been a part of my life. My earliest memories are of hearing the records that my parents would play. As I grew up, my tastes in music broadened. I was constantly on the lookout for new music – beyond the usual fare on Detroit radio. It became an addiction. I would go to local music shops and the big box stores looking to score my next fix. The local music shops are where I started to really find the good stuff.

There was one in particular that really set me on my path to where I am today; “Rock-a-Billies” (unfortunately closed for almost 10 years) sold new and used CDs. The name alone seemed like our meeting was meant to be. They changed locations over the years, each time increasing in size. I discovered countless local artists that I had never heard of, including Jill Jack. I had the pleasure of interviewing her on Motor City Juke Joint on the February 8th episode. Jill wasn’t the first local artist that I discovered in that store that I would go on to either book for a show or interview on air. She definitely won’t be the last.

Detroit is a hotbed for talent, and I want to expose the world to all that it has to offer. I will listen to anything once. If you’re in a band or a solo artist, send me your music. Whether it’s a link or a physical copy, just send it. I’ll listen to it and might even play it on air. You could even end up being a guest on Motor City Juke Joint. Don’t worry about asking if I’m looking for any particular style of music. I’m interested in all genres of music. Sure I listen to a lot of Americana, Rockabilly, Punk, Garage, Surf, Soul, Jazz, Bluegrass, etc., but I’ll give everything shot.

Detroit Radio struggles to keep its share of the media market

Can Detroit Radio Keep Up?

Detroit radio’s struggle to hold onto its place in the current media environment is becoming more difficult as 2018 unfolds. The revenues for radio are decreasing as they are split between other mediums – with digital being the main beneficiary. In addition, factor in the way radio measures their ratings with the PPM (portable people meter) system and you have two of the principal reasons for their problems.

As the revenue picture for Detroit radio continues to head in the wrong direction, the corporate entities that own these stations continue to look for ways to cut costs. These cuts have ultimately affected the programming content, and the product, as they are eliminating established talent in favor of less expensive options.

Another major factor is the rise of an entire generation that has grown up with many portable, shareable, on-demand entertainment options. These digital natives have no loyalty to terrestrial radio – and radio is not part of their daily lives, as it has been with previous generations.

All these disruptions have created opportunities for other platforms to fill the void, left by the decline of Detroit Radio. Detroit has always been a top media market, with a very diversified population known for embracing innovation. Detroit Radio – Your Audience Isn’t Listening

Detroit radio we hardly recognize you!  Where are the radio personalities?  Where has all the talent gone?  You’ve stopped talking to us!

The idea that on-air talent is irrelevant in music radio is the product of the corporate “bean counter.” The practice of voice tracking music sets from a distant studio is like giving relationship advice with recorded message! The personal touch and the connection with the listener are totally absent, and the ability to hold the audience beyond the song diminishes. The station becomes more of a juke box; an impersonal music delivery system that inhibits the ability to attract – and interact with – an audience. What the cost-cutters forget is that when you stop talking to your audience, they stop listening.

Motor City Juke Joint is Detroit Radio

From its conception, Motor City Juke Joint was about two things. It was about Detroit and music. I wanted a show that made the listener feel like they were part of a conversation between musicians talking about music and life. Two and half years later the show is still going strong.

The show moved to New Radio Media in July of 2017. Since then, I have done 56 episodes. Every single one of those episodes was a pleasure to make. The crew working behind the scenes is the finest group of people that I have ever worked with. Without them, I would not be able to produce top-notch content. The delivery method of the show has changed but the message is still the same. Motor City Juke Joint is Detroit Radio.

One might see the name New Radio Media and think that we’re just a radio station. That couldn’t be farther from the truth. It’s funny, I’m so used to radio that even I forget that at times. I also forget to look at the camera, but that’s a topic for another post. Anyway, New Radio Media is so much more than radio. I’m frequently being told that it’s “Original Streaming Entertainment.” Honestly, that is a much better description for what we’re doing. I’m excited about my future here at New Radio Media. This new form of Detroit radio is my new home, and everyone here is now family.

I’d like to end this with a quote from a guest in the third episode of Motor City Juke Joint on New Radio Media. In the quote he refers to himself, but I feel that it applies to all of us here at NRM.
